With wins over the Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies, the Warriors stood at the top of Group C in the NBA Cup group stage standings. On Friday night, the Warriors had a chance to add to their hold at the top of Group C with another NBA Cup game against the New Orleans Pelicans.
In a back-and-forth contest, Andrew Wiggins and Stephen Curry held the Pelicans off in the final frame to secure a tight 112-108 win in New Orleans. With their win over the Pelicans and a Denver Nuggets loss to the Mavericks, the Warriors will clinch Group C in the NBA Cup and lock up a spot in the knock out round of the in-season tournament.
Wiggins continued his strong run, scoring 30 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field with three made 3-pointers. Wiggins knocked down all nine of his attempts from the free throw line. Wiggins added four assists, three rebounds, a steal and a block in 28 minutes against the Pelicans.
While WIggins led the way with 30 points, Steph Curry added 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field with four 3-pointers, seven rebounds and seven assists in 33 minutes. Draymond Green, Buddy Hield and Brandin Podziemski all scored in double figures for the Warriors.
After struggling from the free throw line throughout the season, the Warriors drilled 22-of-29 (75.9%) free throws on Friday night. Heading into Friday's contest, the Warriors carried the worst free throw percentage (70.0) in the NBA. With the Pelicans threatening in the final seconds, Draymond Green went to the line twice and knocked down two free throws late to seal the game for the Warriors.
The Warriors will now quickly head to San Antonio for the second leg of a back-to-back against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
