Thomas Tuchel has emerged as the favourite to succeed Gareth Southgate as the next permanent England manager, according to Sky Sports.

The FA has been speaking with his representatives, and he is in pole position for the job despite Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola being sounded out for the same role.

Tuchel left his position as Bayern Munich manager in May after losing out on the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen and failing to win the Champions League.

He also had major disagreements with the hierarchy that led to his dismissal.

Tuchel’s time back in Germany went south, and he is eyeing a return to England, where his reputation remains intact thanks to his excellent work in charge of Chelsea.

He turned Chelsea into Champions League winners and FA Cup finalists in his first season. The Blues also won the Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

The former Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund boss has been on Manchester United’s radar as they contemplate sacking Erik ten Hag.

However, new part-owners INEOS recently gave the Dutchman a vote of confidence that paved the way for Tuchel to take the England job.

This England squad looks ready-made for Tuchel, whose system balances attacking intent with defensive solidity. He knows most of the players from his time in the Premier League.

The Three Lions are crying out for a world-class manager with a reputation for delivering titles, and Tuchel undoubtedly fits the bill.

Tuchel would be only the third foreign manager of the England men’s team after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello if he is appointed.
