Mets shut out for second straight game in 4-0 loss to Mariners

The Mets were shut out for the second straight night in Seattle, recording just four hits in a 4-0 loss to the Mariners. It's the first time NY has been shut out in back-to-back games this season.

New York (61-56) began the day 0.5 games ahead of Atlanta for the final Wild Card spot, but the Braves snapped their six-game losing streak and are now 0.5 games up on the Mets.

Here are the takeaways…

– Seattle closed the top of the first with a beautiful double play and carried that momentum into the bottom half of the inning. After back-to-back dominant starts, Sean Manaea let up a leadoff double to Victor Robles, who then stole third on Francisco Alvarez's throw back to the mound. Manaea gave up another double to Randy Arozarena, giving the Mariners a 1-0 lead. The lefty got a strikeout but then let up a third double in the inning to Justin Turner, making it 2-0, and later allowed an RBI-single to Mitch Haniger that gave Seattle an early 3-0 lead.

– Manaea walked two in the second, but was able to escape the inning without allowing any more damage. That trend continued in the third as he walked the bases loaded and got out unscathed thanks to nice catches by Harrison Bader and Tyrone Taylor.

Manaea's streak of 7.0 IP and 10 strikeouts came to an end after 85 pitches over just 3.0 innings. He allowed three runs on four hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

– New York's bats struggled against Mariners starter Logan Gilbert all night long. Francisco Lindor opened the game with a single, but Gilbert then retired the next eight straight Mets through the third. Gilbert made it nine in a row when Lindor lined out to open the fourth before Brandon Nimmo walked to give NY their second baserunner of the night. J.D. Martinez and Pete Alonso couldn't make anything happen and the Mets' scoreless stretch continued.

Huascar Brazoban came in to pitch the fourth and tossed back-to-back 1-2-3 innings to keep the score at 3-0. It's his second straight appearance with two hitless innings of work. Reed Garrett, who was activated from the IL prior to the game, took the mound in the sixth and struck out the side.

– Martinez led off the seventh with a single for the team's third hit of the night, but the Mets couldn't capitalize and Gilbert retired the next three straight. Phil Maton got into some trouble in the bottom of the seventh, as Turner drove in another run on a single to left field to make it 4-0.

New York didn't have a late-inning rally in them and extended their scoreless streak to 19 innings.

Game MVP: Logan Gilbert

The 27-year-old had a big bounce-back outing after losing his last three starts. He tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits with six strikeouts and a walk.
