Man City vs Tottenham LIVE: Premier League result and final score as James Maddison stars in shock thrashing

Manchester City hosted Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League after Pep Guardiola renewed his contract at the Etihad – but it failed to change the momentum of his team, as Spurs ran out incredible 4-0 winners to inflict a fifth straight defeat on City.

Erling Haaland missed two early chances but Spurs scored with their first attack, James Maddison netting from Dejan Kulusevski’s cross. Maddison immediately netted his second, clipping in after a Son Heung Min pass, and while City would have hoped for a fast start after half time it was Pedro Porro who instead next scored, rifling in within minutes of the restart.

City continued to push and Vicario had to make a few saves, but it was without real threat or belief and Timo Werner teed up Brennan Johnson for a late fourth on the counter. Follow live reaction from Manchester City vs Tottenham in our live blog, below.

Pep’s contract wasn’t Man City’s answer – but Maddison might be Spurs’

19:56 , Karl Matchett

Five in a row has taken on a different meaning for Manchester City and Pep Guardiola. It was supposed to signify their pursuit of an unprecedented fifth consecutive English title. Instead, the immediate significance comes from another historic first. Guardiola has lost five consecutive matches, his worst ever run bookended by reverses against Tottenham Hotspur.

If the first scarcely left City distraught, with Guardiola unworried by exiting the Carabao Cup, the latest was more emphatic, more meaningful, more chastening, more stunning. Guardiola’s joint heaviest defeat became an embarrassment. He risks being expelled from the title race. City could find themselves eight points behind Liverpool on Sunday, perhaps returning from Anfield next week 11 adrift.

Empires can collapse suddenly and dramatically but City’s was supposed to have been reinforced. This began as an evening of celebration; it became one of humiliation and capitulation. The new-contract bounce, of Guardiola committing his future to the club until 2027, lasted for about 12 minutes of football. The gaudy on-pitch presentation of the Ballon d’Or to Rodri was followed by an illustration of how much City miss their injured talisman. A third straight league defeat showed a now familiar fragility. City were caught on the break too easily and too often. A team without a proper defensive midfielder lost to one with a potent attacking midfielder.

Because, while the Spaniard gazed on from the stands, the dominant figure was James Maddison. Perhaps a fit Rodri would have prevented his seven-minute double – Maddison was left unmarked for each, beautifully as he took them – as the recalled, resurgent Englishman upstaged the City manager and award winner. He once infamously said that, when he goes out for a roast dinner with his family, he wants to be the main man.

He turned this evening into his 28th birthday party. Maddison had spent much of the last month on the bench. This was quite a comeback.

FT – Man City 0-4 Tottenham

19:28 , Karl Matchett

That’s it, it’s full time – Manchester City 0, Tottenham Hotspur 4…if you can believe it.

It’s five straight defeats for Man City, a first time ever in the managerial career for Pep Guardiola that’s happened, and it’s three straight Premier League defeats for them too.

For Spurs, it’s back to winning ways and they’ll rise to sixth place, after defeats for Forest and Villa today. A simply huge win for them.

GOAL! 90+2’ – Man City 0-4 Spurs

19:24 , Karl Matchett

Bergvall skips away in the centre, Akanji pulls him back, yellow card.

A woeful day all around for the champions, who could be eight points behind Liverpool by tomorrow night. The league leaders are away at bottom club Southampton.

And in fact…it’s got even worse! Timo Werner speeds past his man down the left, crosses low to the far post and there’s Johnson sliding in to roll the ball over the line for 4-0!

90’ – Man City 0-3 Spurs

19:21 , Karl Matchett

Three subs in the end for Spurs – Djed Spence is on for Udogie and it’s Bergvall for Sarr too.

We head into stoppage time and there will be four minutes.

88’ – Man City 0-3 Spurs

19:20 , Karl Matchett

Another counter and this time it’s Johnson played in down the left; he rounds Ederson and shoots from a narrow angle – it hits the post and comes out, but the offside flag is up against him. City play on regardless as they look for a consolation.

Timo Werner comes on as sub for James Maddison, who makes Vicario the third Spurs captain of the day. A very happy birthday for the England international.

84’ – Man City 0-3 Spurs

19:16 , Karl Matchett

To their credit, City have still pushed on in the last 15 and tried to create openings, but they are all half-chances or simply moments of sights of goal, rather than clear efforts. Silva has the latest, full on the volley, but well over the bar.

Gvardiol then spins and shoots over the bar…but he’s offside anyway.

80’ – Man City 0-3 Spurs

19:12 , Karl Matchett

Another save from Vicario, denying Haaland, then De Bruyne commits a foul and everything gets a bit unnecessarily angry. Pushing and shoving, everyone grouped in the Spurs box, then it settles. De Bruyne is booked for his tackle.

Final thoughts from Richard Jolly as we enter the game’s late stages:

“Is there any way back for City? Guardiola shuffled the pack at the break, moving Lewis into the middle and Foden to the left, but without making a major difference. He has now brought on Kevin de Bruyne and Jack Grealish; Grealish is now the third played to go on the left wing for City tonight. Guardiola may be tinkering more in desperation than with inspiration.”

76’ – Man City 0-3 Spurs

19:09 , Karl Matchett

Two more chances for City as Silva gets in behind the Spurs defence and tries a cut-back, just about cleared, then Vicario is called upon as a fierce strike is aimed at his near post.

The keeper berates his teammtes for letting City have this dominant spell, but then Akanji commits a foul on the edge of the box and is outraged when it’s actually given.

Then it’s a yellow card for Bernardo Silva for a swiping, lunging tackle on Maddison, who has totally upstaged and outclassed him this afternoon.

72’ – Man City 0-3 Spurs

19:05 , Karl Matchett

Gvardiol shoots from range but it’s easy for Vicario to save.

It’s a double change now for City – De Bruyne and Grealish on for Savinho and Lewis. All or nothing for the hosts naturally, but will Spurs shut up shop or go full Postecoglou and try to smash their opponents on the break?

68’ – Man City 0-3 Spurs

19:03 , Karl Matchett

City seem bereft of ideas and intent in this half. That Porro goal has really taken their hope and their usual ferocity.

Kevin de Bruyne is about to make his return but it will have to be some performance from him to help them back into this match.

64’ – Man City 0-3 Spurs

18:57 , Karl Matchett

First change for Tottenham as captain Son is replaced by Brennan Johnson, the South Korean having been on international duty but also injured prior to that, so some minutes-managing there perhaps. Maddison has the armband now for the visitors.

Kulusevski counters once more, takes on his man and shoots – Ederson this time makes a fine save, high to his right.

60’ – Man City 0-3 Spurs

18:51 , Karl Matchett

Rico Lewis has been booked to add to City’s frustrations. Spurs fans sing away in the stands but for City fans it’s just jeers and silence right now.

Haaland now spins in the box after a loose Bissouma touch – and whacks a curling shot onto the crossbar and over. First notable touch in a while and he almost gets City back in it.

56’ – Man City 0-3 Spurs

18:47 , Karl Matchett

Richard Jolly:

“Manchester City came from 2-0 down at home to Tottenham to win 4-2 in January 2023, a night notable for Guardiola calling his team the ‘happy flowers’. This time, however, the third goal of the game has gone to Spurs. Pedro Porro was completely unmarked, while the influential Kulusevski made the goal with a fine run down the left. The horticultural references from Guardiola may be different tonight. Spurs, meanwhile, are 3-0 up in Manchester for the second time this season.”

GOAL! 52’ – Man City 0-3 Spurs

18:44 , Karl Matchett

Wow – it’s three for Spurs! City again gift possession and this time a cross from the left – Kulusevski again, after taking on three players – finds Solanke far post, he controls and tees it up beautifully for Porro and the right-back absolutely smashes in another goal for Tottenham!

50’ – Man City 0-2 Spurs

18:43 , Karl Matchett

Akanji bodies Solanke to ground and the frustration is clear from the fans and from Guardiola. City wanted a fast start from kick-off and they haven’t been allowed to do so.

Ake for Stones is the half-time change for Man City, who are 52 without defeat here.

Birthday hattrick for Madders?!

HT – City 0-2 Spurs

18:28 , Karl Matchett

It was already a historic run – in a negative sense – for Guardiola last time out. Could it really go to five?

HT – City 0-2 Spurs

18:21 , Karl Matchett

Half time and City are shellshocked here. They were totally dominant for 15 minutes, should have scored once or twice…and then found themselves two goals down.

What can Guardiola provide at the break?

45’ – Man City 0-2 Spurs

18:19 , Karl Matchett

Three minutes added on. The home fans sounding very displeased at present, impatient when their team don’t get the ball in the box but also at Spurs slowing the game down a bit.

Walker goes in on Maddison forcefully and is lucky to escape without a booking.

42’ – Man City 0-2 Spurs

18:14 , Karl Matchett

Vicario continues amid boos from the home crowd. He was caught higher than that by Savinho so perhaps the landing jarred his foot somewhat.

Silva gives the ball away twice in a few seconds, Kulusevski does well once more and Sarr bends a shot well over the crossbar.

Son then has a shooting chance after being played in by the Swede, who has been excellent so far this evening, but he cuts inside instead and is blocked out by three defenders.

40’ – Man City 0-2 Spurs

18:12 , Karl Matchett

Vicario goes down again and needs attention.

Richard Jolly at the Emirates: “A very happy birthday so far for James Maddison, even if City’s celebrations of Pep Guardiola’s new contract and Rodri’s Ballon d’Or are falling a bit flat. Guardiola’s latest attempt to compensate for Rodri’s absence has been to play a 4-4-1-1 formation. Phil Foden is finding space as a No 10. The problem for City is that they, without Rodri, they have not tracked Maddison when he has scored. It also feels a bit odd to see Rico Lewis, who could have been used in the middle of that midfield, instead out on the right.”

36’ – Man City 0-2 Spurs

18:10 , Karl Matchett

Almost a chance, almost a mistake. A lofted pass sees Porro head back toward Vicario but short – the goalkeeper has to rush out to get there before Savinho, who catches him with a lofted boot, but just a foul no card.

Guardiola in conversation on the bench with his coaches – that new two-year deal hasn’t made any immediate change to City’s fortunes.

32’ – Man City 0-2 Spurs

18:05 , Karl Matchett

City are having plenty of joy in buildup play down the left and Gvardiol again delivers a nice ball into the box – Savinho’s diving header is tipped away by Vicario and he’s offside anyway.

Udogie now gives away a bit of a needless free-kick on the right and Foden has the chance to deliver…all the way across and out for a goal kick.

28’ – Man City 0-2 Spurs

City try to press Spurs high up but Davies and Maddison just about do enough to play past it. Kulusevski then leads the counter and pulls it across towards Son six yards out – but he’s on his heels and Walker just about gets there first to clear.

Son then plays a reverse pass to feed in Solanke who rifles a shot in on goal – tipped over by Ederson.

24’ – Man City 0-2 Spurs

17:58 , Karl Matchett

Another chance at one end for Haaland, another moment of danger caused by Son at the other. Neither lead to the goalkeepers needing to intervene, but City look so wary now every time Spurs look to counter-attack.

We haven’t really seen Foden on the ball too much, nor out on the right actually – he’s very narrow and almost behind Haaland, leaving Walker the whole flank to run at. He hasn’t got forward much yet though and is struggling against Son the other way.

GOAL! 19’ – Man City 0-2 Spurs

17:52 , Karl Matchett

Incredible scenes! Dreadful passing out as Gvardiol gives it away to Maddison, he plays a one-two with Son on the edge of the area, draws Ederson and just…a gorgeous, gorgeous clip over the Brazilian goalkeeper and into the net!

Spurs are two goals up after 20 minutes!

18’ – Man City 0-1 Spurs

17:51 , Karl Matchett

Goodness me – Son Heung Min almost makes it 2-0 with an outrageous bending effort, but Ederson is able to lunge and stretch and do really well to parry it around the post and wide. Spurs ahead out of nothing, but suddenly looking very confident and happy to get further upfield.

Pep Guardiola stalks the touchline, spits and watches on as his team gift Spurs another chance…

16’ – Man City 0-1 Spurs

17:49 , Karl Matchett

Richard Jolly at the Etihad:

“Early reward for a couple of Ange Postecoglou’s decisions: bringing back James Maddison, who has scored, but also the resulting shift of Dejan Kulusevski, Spurs’ best player this season when in midfield, to the right wing. But Kulusevski invariably plays well at the Etihad. He has scored here on each of Tottenham’s three previous trips. Now he has an assist already. Josko Gvardiol probably could have done better for the goal, though, backing off to give Kulusevski too much room.”

GOAL! 13’ – Man City 0-1 Spurs

17:46 , Karl Matchett

Talk of the devil…!! A brilliant run down the right from Kulusevski who beats Gvardiol to a loose ball, holds him off and bends a fantastic, curling cross over Stones and right onto James Maddison’s left boot – and full on the stride the attacking midfielder buries it past Ederson and in for a 1-0 lead for Spurs, with just about their first move into the box!

12’ – Man City 0-0 Spurs

17:45 , Karl Matchett

Haaland has another chance and between the two shots he’s had, you’d absolutely back him to nail one – but this one is again off the mark, a good strike this time hard and low but Vicario makes the save with his feet.

Spurs just starting to get a foot on the ball themselves at times; Kulusevski is wide right today rather than through the middle where he has been so effective of late and they’ll need the Swede to impress.

8’ – Man City 0-0 Spurs

17:42 , Karl Matchett

Gundogan clips a ball over the top of the Spurs defence and Walker makes the darting run beyond – but can’t quite stretch to loop a cross over. Looks in these early stages as though Rico Lewis is more or less in midfield with Gundogan and Silva, but it’s a fluid City system as you can imagine.

At the other end Son gets into the box for the first time and fizzes a low ball over, but nobody is with him in attack.

4’ – Man City 0-0 Spurs

17:37 , Karl Matchett

All City in the opening exchanges, and the first real opening falls the way of Haaland – but his first touch is bad! Silva and Gvardiol open the defence up but the striker’s control is really poor, he can’t shift his feet and eventually just blams the ball straight at Ben Davies, who is at centre-back today.

Deflected behind and that’s a corner…which Spurs clear.

1’ – Man City 0-0 Spurs

17:34 , Karl Matchett

Well that was fast. We kick-off, Foden goes forward…and Sarr scythes him down, earning a yellow card inside 16 seconds!

No letting the first tackle go today, that was a chop down from behind and he’s straight in the book.

Man City vs Tottenham LIVE

We have Richard Jolly at the game today. Ahead of kick-off, here are his thoughts:

“Tottenham came to the Etihad last season without their first-choice centre-backs and got a 3-3 draw. Now they return without their first-choice centre-backs but with Ange Postecoglou recalling James Maddison in midfield. Pep Guardiola, however, does have some centre-backs who are fit to return, with John Stones and Manuel Akanji back. It looks as though Rico Lewis is starting in midfield.”

Dejan Kulusevski’s record against Manchester City

17:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Dejan Kulusevski has been Tottenham’s player of the season so far, and the Sweden international has a brilliant record against today’s opponents as well.

He has scored on all three of his visits to the Etihad, including his first for the club in a 3-2 win there in February 2022 as well as last season’s late equaliser to rescue a 3-3 draw.

Kulusevski has had a hand in more Premier League goals against Man City (five – three goals, two assists) than he has against any other side, scoring or assisting five of our last nine league goals against Pep Guardiola’s team.

Manchester City risk losing three consecutive league fixtures for the first time under Pep Guardiola. It last happened in February to March 2016 during Manuel Pellegrini’s reign, and included a home defeat against Tottenham.

But Guardiola has lost six Premier League games versus Spurs and conceded 22 goals – more than against any other opponent. In fact, Tottenham have scored at least twice in each of their past three top-flight games at the Etihad Stadium.

Ange Postecoglou relishing Tottenham’s key run of fixtures before Christmas

17:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Ange Postecoglou knows the next month will be “significant” for Tottenham, but is confident they will improve and not be mid-table at Christmas.

Postecoglou remains bullish about Tottenham’s progress and acutely aware of the scrutiny set to come his way if they stay 10th.

“Christmas is a joyous occasion, irrespective, and I think it should be celebrated. If we’re still 10th then people won’t be happy, I won’t be happy, but we might not be 10th,” Postecoglou pointed out before nine games in 30 days.

“Certainly for us I think it’s a significant period because you look at those games and we’ve got the league where we’ve got to improve our position and a couple of important European fixtures that can set us up for the back half of the year, also a Carabao Cup quarter-final.”

Pep Guardiola sure 75 per cent of Premier League clubs want Man City relegated

16:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Pep Guardiola claims three-quarters of the Premier League want to see Manchester City relegated over financial irregularities.

But the City boss has vowed to stay on and lift the club back to the top even if they are sent all the way down to the National League.

Guardiola ended speculation over his immediate future this week by extending his contract, which had been due to expire at the end of the season, through to the summer of 2027.

That has given the club some stability at a time of great uncertainty as they fight 115 charges related to alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations.

City have denied all wrongdoing but their punishment if found guilty could be severe, with demotion even a possibility.

Ange Postecoglou does not believe Spurs are ‘down in dumps’ ahead of City test

16:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Ange Postecoglou insists his Tottenham squad will not be “down in the dumps” ahead of Saturday’s trip to Manchester City despite Rodrigo Bentancur being the latest player to join the list of absentees.

Bentancur has been given a seven-match domestic suspension by the Football Association for the use of racist language during a media interview earlier this year and while Spurs have appealed against the length of ban, the Uruguay international will definitely sit out the Etihad Stadium clash.

“It’s really important when they come back here again we move on pretty quickly,” Postecoglou reflected, with reference to the 2-1 home loss to Ipswich before the international break.

“They understand we still have to do our review and we did that. We looked back at the areas we need to be better, but I don’t get the sense the lads are down in the dumps in any way.”

Worry for Tottenham as defensive injuries hit

Tottenham will face Manchester City and Erling Haaland without their first-choice centre-back partnership, with vice-captain Cristian Romero forced to return early from national team duty due to his ongoing toe issue which will rule him out of the fixture against Pep Guardiola’s side. Managerial godfather Pep Guardiola is about to accept his greatest challenge yet at Man City

16:00 , Jamie Braidwood

It could seem a rare vote of confidence when a club on a record losing run gives a manager a new contract. Then again, when the manager is Pep Guardiola, his longest sequence of defeats only stands at four; so does his unique chain of English league titles.

So if it is a vote of confidence, it is by Guardiola in Manchester City and not vice versa. There were reasons for the manager to walk away; some would say, 115 of them. Guardiola’s decision to commit himself to the club for a further year, until 2026, and, with a one-season option on top of that, seems to reflect a belief that City will emerge completely or relatively unscathed from the hearing into the Premier League’s century of charges.

Guardiola has tended to be bullishly outspoken in the club’s defence, even though he is not in the dock personally and most of the alleged offences predate his arrival. Guardiola said in September the rest of football wanted City to “disappear off the face of the earth”. A new deal nevertheless indicates he does not expect next autumn’s fixture list to contain Plymouth and Preston, let alone Braintree and Boston.

Building Man City 3.0 will be Pep Guardiola’s greatest challenge yet

Pep Guardiola promises to stay with Man City even if they are relegated

15:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Pep Guardiola has stated his determination to lead Manchester City back to the top even if they are relegated to the National League over alleged financial irregularities.

The City manager this week ended speculation over his immediate future by extending his contract with the club he has guided to six Premier League titles through to the summer of 2027.

The news has given the champions a lift at a time of huge uncertainty off the field. The club are currently battling 115 charges of alleged rule-breaking following an investigation into their financial affairs.

City deny all wrongdoing but, if found guilty, they could face a severe punishment, including the possibility of relegation.

Guardiola, who revealed his contract negotiations were concluded in two hours, said: “I said six months ago, not because now I’ve extended my contract.

“I said when all the clubs accused us of doing something wrong, (and people asked) what happens if we are relegated, (I said) I will be here.

“Next year, I don’t know the position of the Conference they are going to (put) us, (but) we are going to come up and come up and come back to the Premier League. I knew it then and I feel it now.”

Pep Guardiola on Man City losing four games in a row

15:35 , Jamie Braidwood

“When you are here for nine years, with a long time at one club, you live all the scenarios, all the situations. You’re able to lose four games in a row, but at the same time you’re able to win four Premier Leagues in a row. The difference is that most of the teams are able to lose four games in a row in different competitions but just one team won four Premier Leagues in a row. So it’s happened.

“We have to break the situation [against Tottenham]. We have to start winning games. Tomorrow we are coming back at home so hopefully we can perform well and start to take our rhythm.”

Good afternoon

15:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Manchester City face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League as Pep Guardiola’s side look to end an unprecedented run of four defeats in all competitions.

The champions fell further behind leaders Liverpool before the international break with a shock 2-1 defeat to Brighton, that extended Guardiola’s worst-ever run of results.

City’s losing streak began with a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, but Ange Postecoglou’s team have continued to suffer with inconsistency.

Spurs were stunned by Ipswich before the international break, with the newly promoted side earning their first win of the season in north London.

It leaves Spurs in mid-table, while City will look to get their title defence going again by ending their poor run of form.
