Luis Diaz has been among the best-performing Liverpool players so far this season, scoring nine goals in 16 games overall, including a Champions League hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen.

It’s been a remarkable transformation for the 27-year-old, who struggled for consistency under Jurgen Klopp. However, working alongside Arne Slot and his new coaching staff has brought the best out of the Colombia international, who has taken his game to new heights.

His form has been so good that it’s led to talk of a new contract with his current terms expiring in 2027. That would be a justified reward for Diaz, who is vying for the left-wing berth in the Liverpool attack with Cody Gakpo.

Nonetheless, Diaz’s Liverpool form has not always been apparent in his recent appearances for the national team.

'He doesn't understand'

Diaz has been called out for indifferent displays for the South American side during their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign. Despite wins against Argentina and Chile since the season got underway, Colombia have also been harshly criticised after defeats to Bolivia – and most recently – Uruguay.

The game against Darwin Nunez’s nation ended in a controversial 3-2 defeat on Friday night, with Diaz exchanging words at the final whistle with his Liverpool colleague.

And the criticism has spilled over in the days following the game, with Colombia legend Faustino Asprilla laying the boot into Lucho following the Uruguay defeat. Having given the ball away 20 times during the game – according to Sofascore – Asprilla has called for Diaz to be given clearer instructions in order to better maintain possession.

"He hasn't been able to understand that he doesn't have to dribble in the middle of the field,” the former Newcastle forward told ESPN.

Diaz 'keeps losing the ball'

“He hasn't been able to grasp that. There was a ball they gave him in the area, that's where he needed to take on defenders, and he stopped it and sent in a cross that was cut off – those are the balls he needs to get.

"Until he understands that with the Colombian national team, when playing in midfield, if he doesn't play with one or two touches it's going to be very difficult for him… I don't know who goes up to him and tells him 'Lucho, here it's about quick touches.' Nobody talks to him, nobody tells him anything and he loses and loses balls. He insists and keeps losing the ball again."
