IndyCar announced its race start times for its 17-race campaign on Fox, highlighted by an additional hour of network TV lead-in for the Indianapolis 500.
The upcoming season, with two-time defending series champ Alex Palou and two-time defending 500 winner Josef Newgarden looking to go back-to-back-to-back, kicks off March 2 on the streets of St. Pete at noon (ET).
Pato O’Ward appeared the likely winner of Sunday’s IndyCar season-opener on the streets of St. Pete until a mechanical malfunction with three laps to go slowed him up.
Somewhat significant start time changes compared to last year’s slate on NBC, USA Network and Peacock include:
-
The Thermal Club: What was a noon ET start (9 a.m. local) for a non-points exhibition will now be held at 3 p.m. ET/noon local.
-
The Indy 500: Though the scheduled green flag start time of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, which has fallen around 12:45 p.m. in recent years, isn’t expected to change, IndyCar fans watching from home will get an additional hour of pre-race airtime where Fox can do some additional storytelling that either had aired on NBC’s Peacock or NBC Sports platforms or hadn’t existed. The six-hour window on Fox will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
-
Laguna Seca: IndyCar’s trip to California’s central coast will be held three hours earlier in 2025, moving to 3 p.m. ET/noon local.
-
Iowa Speedway doubleheader: A year ago, Race 1 was at dusk and Race 2 15 hours later, IndyCar’s trip to the short oval just outside Des Moines features a 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. local start on Saturday afternoon, followed by a mid-afternoon start on Sunday (2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. local).
-
World Wide Technology Raceway: While also shifting two months forward in the schedule, IndyCar’s trip just outside St. Louis will see an oval race held in mid-afternoon (3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. local), three hours earlier than in 2024.
IndyCar’s new TV deal with Fox: The good, bad and remaining questions
Of note, all races minus the 500 will feature two-and-a-half hour windows. In 2023, IndyCar landed eight three-hour windows and one three-and-a-half hour one in its deal with NBC. Six ran two-and-a-half hours, oftentimes with post-race shows that ran over onto NBC’s Peacock streaming platform.
