Groups, businesses hope to start new traditions on KC Current game days

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Current is back at CPKC Stadium Saturday for its second game in its new home.

Fans are hoping some traditions will stick as the season progresses.

Local groups and businesses in the River Market hope you’ll make them a part of your pregame festivities.

Starting with games and specials and maybe even a community walk to the stadium.

Every tradition starts with an idea.

“We were always planning to walk together, just a group of friends, hey, let’s walk to the game together,” Rachel Pierce, communications chair at the Downtown Neighborhood Association.

With the hope that it sticks.

“We decided to open it up,” she said. “Hey, let’s make this a thing.”

Groups like the Downtown Neighborhood Association hope to see their plans become a part of yours on game day.

“It’s really cool to be able to start something that now people are going to be doing every game,” Peter Carnesciali said, president of the Downtown Neighborhood Association.

You’ll meet at the Town of Kansas Bridge and walk about a mile and a half, with hundreds of other fans making their way to the stadium.

“There’s no cars the entire way, it’s just the pedestrian bike trail there,” Carnesciali said.

Businesses like DoubleTap KC are also starting their own tailgate and watch party after seeing a successful turnout from the first home game.

“We had the place packed. It felt like I was there but I was only five minutes down the road,” Terry Keith, owner of DoubleTap KC said.

Keith said their event starts three hours before game time, with games, drink specials and a shuttle service that’ll take you to the stadium for $15.

“I am a Kansas City native and so being able to see that we are part of something that hasn’t been done before, right in our backyard, it’s really fulfilling,” he said.

All you have to do, lace up your shoes, and wear your best teal.
