Bruins Reveal Opening Night Starting Goalie

Even with the regular season rapidly approaching, Boston Bruins star goalie Jeremy Swayman remains a restricted free agent. Bruins president Cam Neely shared earlier that the club has offered Swayman $64 million, but even with this being the case, the Anchorage, Alaska native is still not signed.

Due to this and the fact that it is so late into training camp, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said Swayman would likely not be ready for the club's season opener. In addition, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery added that Joonas Korpisalo will be the club's opening night starter because of this.

Sweeney notes that at this stage of camp, it might be “unlikely” that Swayman would be ready to go for Boston’s season opener.

Montgomery adds on Korpisalo: “Right now he’s going to be our Game 1 starter.”

This is certainly a far different position than the Bruins were in last season. During the 2023-24 campaign, they had an elite Swayman and Linus Ullmark tandem on their opening night roster. Now, newcomer Korpisalo will be their opening night starter and look to get their start their season off on the right foot.

Korpisalo, 30, was one of the pieces that the Bruins got back from the Ottawa Senators in the Ullmark trade. He is coming off a tough 2023-23 season, posting a 21-26-4 record, a 3.27 goals-against average (GAA), and a .890 save percentage (SV%).

While this past season was rough for Korpisalo, he has the potential to bounce back. Besides having an excellent start to the pre-season, he also had success not too long ago. Just back in 2022-23 with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Los Angeles Kings, he posted an 18-14-4 record, a .914 SV%, and a 2.87 GAA.
