Atalanta vs Liverpool LIVE: Europa League latest score and updates with Reds chasing more goals

Atalanta vs Liverpool LIVE: Europa League latest score and updates with Reds chasing more goals

Liverpool require one more European comeback under Jurgen Klopp as the Reds travel to Atalanta looking to keep their Europa League hopes alive.

Klopp’s side were favourites to reach the Dublin final on May 22 and provide a fitting farewell for the German manager, but Atalanta ripped up the script as they stunned Anfield with a 3-0 victory in last week’s quarter-final first leg.

Liverpool have overturned a 3-0 defeat under Klopp before, famously against Barcelona and Lionel Messi in the Champions League in 2019, but that was at Anfield. But Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace means the Reds are without a win in three games. Follow all the action below plus get the latest odds and tips right here:

Liverpool’s meek Europa League exit highlights the coming end of an era

Now the end is near, and Jurgen Klopp didn’t even get to do it his way. There was no last great European comeback, of the type that really made the German’s legacy at Liverpool. The failure to even get close to such a feat against a resolute Atalanta indicates there may not be one last grand stand in the Premier League, either.

Instead, rather than making everyone lament Klopp’s departure when there might be so much more to give, this was just another match that illustrated this era really is “running out of energy”, as he put it.

This was just too much, in a way you don’t usually hear about a Klopp team.

Jurgen Klopp is next to speak to TNT.

He praises the commitment and desire of his side, saying that it was a tricky game.

“A bit unlucky with Trent, if he was a bit fitter he could go a bit longer, but then we missed that. The longer the game went, we changed [things] but lost structure. We couldn’t create properly, but we won the game and that’s what we wanted to show.

“We can now focus on the league and that’s what we’ll do.

“We’ve created 67 shots in three games that we didn’t win one of. We played not bad in that period. We have two-and-a-half days to make sure we recover. This was the reaction we had to show.

“Let’s put a line under this competition, we would’ve wished we could go to Dublin. Now we have one competition left, and we throw everything into that.”

FT: Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

On TNT, Peter Crouch is criticising Mo Salah for missing that chance in the first half. The Egyptian failed to lob Musso having caught the ‘keeper in no man’s land.

Presenter Jules Breach highlights that it’s now been 360 minutes since Liverpool’s last goal from open play.

Virgil van Dijk is first to come in front of the cameras.

He credits Atalanta, saying that Liverpool showed “great fight”.

“The reality is that we’re out, and we have to very quickly turn this around. We need everyone for the last push.

“We had some opportunities. There was still time, [but] maybe at times we wanted it too quickly. Like I said, credit to Atalanta.”

When asked how difficult the game was, he says that Liverpool created chances, but maybe didn’t make the right decisions.

“We’re out of the competition, and that’s a bad feeling. Showing maturity, showing togetherness, and professionalism, is the key.

“Everyone feels disappointed, but we don’t have a lot of time to be disappointed. Anything is still possible.”

For Liverpool, attention turns to the Premier League title race. The Reds travel to south London to face Fulham at the weekend, before a midweek Merseyside derby against Everton on 24 April. They then face West Ham, Spurs and Villa as they bid to catch Manchester City at the top of the table.

For Atalanta, they continue the hunt for the top five in Serie A, and a place in next season’s Champions League. They face Monza at the weekend, before a midweek Coppa Italia tie against Fiorentina.

The Italian side will be facing either Benfica or Marseille in the semi-finals, the first leg of which takes place on 2 May.

21:27 , Chris Wilson

65 mins: Miranchuk almost slips in Koopmeiners, but he’s overhit it.

Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

21:26 , Chris Wilson

Moments later, Alisson claims it well from De Roon’s cross.

Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

21:23 , Chris Wilson

62 mins: A lot like last week’s game in terms of Atalanta’s shape, and the fact they’re getting almost all their men behind the ball in defence.

When they do break they look fairly dangerous though, and Ederson wins a throw.

Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

21:21 , Chris Wilson

The teams are in the tunnel once more. Are we about to see another Liverpool comeback in Europe?

HT – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

21:04 , Karl Matchett

Plenty of subs warming up at half-time for Liverpool including Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo and Darwin Nunez, but doesn’t look as though they’ll be coming on just yet.

Second half on the way.

HT – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:56 , Karl Matchett

Another Liverpool goal before the hour mark would make this tie very interesting indeed.

“A penalty all day long and Salah was the coolest player in the stadium,” says Peter Crouch on TNT Sports.

He also felt it should have been a red card for Hien for that handball which stopped Diaz running into the box.

HT – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:52 , Karl Matchett

Liverpool needing even more attacking movement and chances than they’ve fashioned so far – Salah should have scored a second, but they’ve not had lots more from open play just yet.

44’ – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:48 , Karl Matchett

Two minutes added on. Gakpo does well to win possession again and take a quick throw – he has been much-improved over the last few games.

Konate has to produce a good piece of defending shortly before the whistle goes.

Half time and Liverpool are not quite halfway to where they want to be, but they are in a reasonable spot on the night so far, a goal to the good – but still trailing 3-1 on aggregate.

42’ – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:45 , Karl Matchett

Salah’s turn to feed a pass through to Diaz who would be racing through into the box – but Hien leans in and very deliberately handles. Booking for the defender, booking also for Diaz for asking for a card for the Atalanta man.

From the free-kick which is central and 35 yards out, Alexander-Arnold goes for goal but it’s straight into the wall.

40’ – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:42 , Karl Matchett

Trent Alexander-Arnold escapes twice. First he loses the ball and Scamacca can race through at Alisson – but the keeper reacts quickly and tackles the ball away to safety.

Then the right-back is deeper than the rest of his line and very nearly plays on Koopmeiners, who rattles his shot into the bottom corner – but the offside flag is indeed up and it won’t count.

38’ – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:40 , Karl Matchett

Gakpo lofts a brilliant pass over the defence and Salah races through to lob the keeper…and gets it horribly wrong! Bounces wide of goal, well wide in fact. That should be easy for a forward of his quality – a big chance gone for the Reds.

30’ – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:32 , Karl Matchett

Scamacca rolls a shot across the face of goal and wide – not a danger this time but Liverpool have let him in behind the centre-backs a couple of times now.

Musso rushes out of goal to clear and only sends it to Van Dijk, but the centre-back scuffs his attempted long-range half-volley.

Gakpo, Diaz and Salah then spark a counter-attack and almost sneak through, but for a last-ditch Hien challenge.

26’ – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:29 , Karl Matchett

Jones feeds Salah who this time spins into the right channel – another good example of the positional rotation from the away side.

Szoboszlai has pushed into the right wing area several times attempting the same thing.

22’ – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:23 , Karl Matchett

Great move down the right from Liverpool as Szoboszlai and Alexander-Arnold combine in space, a cross finds Jones on the far post – and he diverts it back towards Salah, who can’t control and shoot from a central spot. Atalanta content to sit back at the moment and look to counter-attack when they can.

18’ – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:19 , Karl Matchett

Liverpool approaching the game very differently to a week ago – much more rotation of positions and movement off the ball, attempting to use Aalanta’s man marking system against them. No further chances on goal and Musso looks assured with high balls aimed his way.

14’ – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:16 , Karl Matchett

Szoboszlai blams in a shot from 20 yards and forces a save; Gakpo then flicks a pass to Diaz but the keeper is out quickly to stop him getting a free shot away.

Moments later Van Dijk diverts a cross towards his own goal – Alisson pulls off a wonder save to palm the ball away!

10’ – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:12 , Karl Matchett

Well, well. That’s a rapid start the Reds could hardly have wished for – now let’s see how the hosts react.

Klopp is keen for the visitors to keep the pressure on the Bergamo side from the restart, Gasperini asks for calm from his players.

GOAL! 7’ – Atalanta 0-1 Liverpool (agg 3-1)

20:11 , Karl Matchett

And Salah scores! A lengthy VAR check but the penalty stands and the No11 wallops it into the bottom corner, no mistakes.

The Reds have one of the three they need with just seven minutes on the clock.

6’ – Atalanta 0-0 Liverpool (3-0 agg)

20:10 , Karl Matchett

Penalty to Liverpool! What a start this is – Alexander-Arnold’s cross is handled and the ref points to the spot!

4’ – Atalanta 0-0 Liverpool (3-0 agg)

20:09 , Karl Matchett

Scamacca spins one wide off-balance, Gakpo surges forward from deep and is fouled.

Van Dijk, meanwhile, needs some medical attention after an apparent finger dislocation.

Raucous inside the stadium and the Reds have come out quickly.

1’ – Atalanta 0-0 Liverpool (3-0 agg)

20:02 , Karl Matchett

Liverpool get us underway! Alisson, Trent, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson – only the third time this season Jurgen Klopp has been able to field that first-choice goalkeeper and defence.

Atalanta 0-0 Liverpool (3-0 agg)

20:00 , Karl Matchett

The two captains swap pendants, contest the toss and shake hands – we’re good to go in Bergamo. Will it be the latest chapter of Liverpool’s European comebacks, or simply an exit with a whimper? Let’s find out.

How the teams are faring

19:40 , Chris Wilson

Since last week’s game, Liverpool have go on to lose 1-0 to Crystal Palace at Anfield, while Atalanta drew 2-2 to Verona in Serie A.

Atalanta are at sixth in the league, having won one, drawn two and lost two of their last five league games. Remember that Serie A will likely receive one more place in next season’s Champions League due to other European results.

For Liverpool, the title race is still open even if it’s been tipped in City’s favour. The Reds sit third, two points behind Pep Guardiola’s men. Nothing is certain, but fans will know that the Europa League presents the club’s best chance of more silverware in Klopp’s final season.

Jurgen Klopp hopes Liverpool can evoke spirit of Barcelona comeback at Atalanta

19:30 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will evoke the spirit of their Barcelonacomeback when he sends his team out to keep their Europa League hopes alive against Atalanta in Bergamo.

The Reds have a 3-0 deficit to overturn from the first leg if they are to make the semi-finals, a scenario which has echoes of their famous comeback to beat the Catalan side in a Champions League semi-final in May 2019 on their way to winning a sixth European Cup.

After that victory his players remarked about the stirring speech he gave in the dressing room before kick-off and Klopp said, although he does not yet have anything planned, he can use that brilliant night at Anfield as a reference point even though they will not have the backing of a home crowd.

““After the game (last week) everyone in the stadium thought ‘that’s it’. Now it’s a week later I don’t think everyone thinks it is already decided

“We want to win the game. If we want to win, we better play good. If we play good, we have a chance to win it. Then we will see.”

Liverpool’s electric attack has suffered a short circuit – but Jurgen Klopp knows how to make it spark again

19:20 , Chris Wilson

Ahead of European games like this, Jurgen Klopp doesn’t prepare a speech. Most of the words come naturally. He is already in the mood, knowing he has to inspire a similar feeling of insurgency in his players. There is more than enough experience to draw on, from either Klopp’s first season or his most famous.

Ahead of their Europa League semi-final second leg at Atalanta, the Liverpool manager can point to the comeback against Borussia Dortmund at this very stage of the same competition eight years ago or the legacy game that was Barcelona. Both were invigorated by the same kind of spirit that is now required to overcome the Serie A side’s 3-0 lead.

The main message, of course, will be that if anyone can then Liverpool can.

A potentially crucial difference from all those epics, however, is not just that this quarter-final second leg is away from Anfield. It is what Liverpool are doing right now.

How a defeat to Man United caused Liverpool to unravel in the title race

18:50 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool’s recent form has been in stark contrast to the majority of the season, and they find themselves on the brink of a disappointing European exit and an exit from the title race.

A 4-3 in the FA Cup ended the quest for a quadruple and, Klopp said, “was like a catastrophe because we were that good and lost it anyway”. A 2-2 in the Premier League has been followed by twin Liverpool defeats at Anfield, to Atalanta and Crystal Palace on Sunday. “I am not sure how we dealt with the United games particularly helped,” said Klopp.

If it suggests his mentality monsters lost their nerve in a pivotal week, Liverpool’s unravelling has felt a cause of fatigue and form, of a previously prolific side proving poor in both boxes, of a team who, as players returned, are in theory as strong as they have been for months but who have just delivered their two worst results of the campaign.

Conor Bradley has been ruled out for three weeks after suffering an ankle injury in the 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota and Alisson are now all back from injury and featured at the weekend. Klopp made changes for the first leg – and may do so again given Liverpool’s trip to Fulham in the Premier League is on Sunday and they must win every game to have a chance of winning the title.

Why Premier League is now at risk of missing out on fifth Champions League spot

18:30 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool will almost certainly be safe in qualifying for next year’s Champions League, but their performance tonight could well affect the upcoming season for other English teams.

The Premier League’s hopes of gaining an extra Champions League spot in next season’s revamped competition have been dealt a blow following another poor night of results in Europe.

The Champions League is being expanded to a 36-team tournament from 2024/25 and two of the extra four places will be awarded to countries whose teams perform best in this season’s European competitions.

As confirmed by Uefa on their website, England currently sits third in the race, behind Italy and Germany, which would mean Serie A and the Bundesliga receive a fifth Champions League place next season.

Football betting sites see the Reds as favourites to win on the night, but Atalanta have already demonstrated their quality against Klopp’s side and are odds-on to punch their ticket for the semis.

A home win is priced at 4/1, while a draw is offered at 4/1. A Liverpool win is seen as the most likely result, with odds of 4/7.

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool have plunged down the rankings of favourites to win the competition – they’re currently ranked at 11/1.

Current favourites to win the Europa League are Bayer Leverkusen, at 5/4, and Atalanta at 9/2.
